FULL BIOGRAPHY

As a teen prodigy who mastered electric guitar, percussion and piano, Milan-born Alex Guesta possessed the talent and magnetic demeanor to emerge as a rock star. But that was before he stepped foot into his first dance club at age 18. In an instant, the wheels of fortune changed course.

“I never intended to be a DJ,” Guesta admits. “I played in rock bands as a teen-ager, but I was curious about the dance music I heard on the radio. The first time I walked into a club, I fell in love with the atmosphere. It was its own world. I bought a mixer and a pair of turntables and spent hours creating mixes in my bedroom. It became my passion.” And now it is his life’s work.

Today, as a producer, remixer and live DJ, Alex Guesta ranks as royalty in the global dance community. Since 2008, he has issued more than 100 songs—with 20 remixes and collaborations released in just the past year—supported by mainstream outlets like BBC Radio and Ministry of Sound, and embraced by the genre’s leading DJs, including Axwell, Swedish House Mafia, David Guetta, Roger Sanchez, Hardwell, Paul Oakenfold, Fedde Le Grand, Alesso, Nicky Romero and Bingo Players. In addition, Guesta is signed to EDM label Reshape and a worldwide publishing deal with Dipíu.

Among his high-profile mixes are re-rubs for Flo Rida, Sia & David Guetta’s international smash “Wild Ones”; Kelly Rowland’s “What A Feeling” (a top 40 hit in more than a dozen countries); Italian House DJ Alex Gaudino’s No. 1 U.S. Hot Dance Airplay “I’m In Love (I Wanna Do It)”; and, most recently, Nicole Scherzinger’s “Missing You.”

Guesta’s collective of charted Club Play hits is supported by an energetic live club show showcasing a spectacle of kaleidoscopic beats, spiced with the novelty of his masterful live percussion. To date, Guesta has appeared in Italy, the U.S., Russia, the Ukraine, Holland, Switzerland, Austria, France, Serbia, Spain, Egypt… 26 countries and counting. He notes, “The difference between a real DJ and a guy with a turntable is that you are performing with the people—not for them. You have to adapt the right track in the right moment to pack the dance floor. Every club has its own history.”

Guesta’s own Italian-bred history, in fact, is also overflowing with music, albeit with a different texture. His father was a professional musician, who taught young Alex to play piano. “There was always passion for melody in our home,” he says. “From my first memories, there was music.” That led to commandeering guitar and percussion, which he put to use in a number of rock bands as a teen—that is, until the fateful night when clubland opened its doors.

“I would spend hours at home on my turntables teaching myself to remix music,” Guesta says. But with little cash to buy dance records, he heeded the advice of a friend that suggested he earn money spinning in local bars. That led to small clubs, then private parties, where he played house music, techno, trance and rock.

As his skills progressed, Guesta began to focus on the burgeoning EDM dance movement—and recognized that his next step was to create music, instead of playing and refashioning other artists’ hits. “I bought a simple program and started working with loops. I made some pretty awful music,” he muses. “But then I began collaborating with a more experienced friend. I watched his moves, I learned his programs and started to understand how it works. Day by day, I learned more… and in fact, I’m still learning. A talented producer never stops.”

In 2007, he released first collaboration “Get Ya Drink Up,” by Guesta & Ensaime. That was followed in 2008 by indie solo production “Just Let It Play,” which reached No. 1 on the Italian Club Play chart. “That really was the beginning,” Guesta says. “Nobody would release the song, so I put it out myself. I realized then that if you believe in something, you have to go for it on your own.”

But Guesta wasn’t on his own for long. In short order, his music was embraced by the leading DJs he so admired, including Tiesto and Bob Sinclar, who began spinning “Drink” as part of their club sets.

In 2012, his fortunes reached a new pinnacle with the success of “Ran Tam Tam,” released on the acclaimed Armada dance label, which propelled Guesta to international acclaim. Radio supported the No. 1 Club Play hit for an amazing seven months, while the global DJ community added the track to their live club sets, including luminaries Axwell, Swedish House Mafia, David Guetta, Hardwell, Paul Oakenfold, Fedde Le Grand, Alesso, Nicky Romero and Bingo Players.

“Every record has a story. They are all my own creations, my children… but ‘Ran Tam Tam’ represents a big moment in my life,” Guesta says. “Because of that song, I toured as the opening act for Swedish Mafia, and it established me as a producer. It was very satisfying.”

From there, every major dance label began contacting DJ Guesta to collaborate with their acts, as well as mainstream top 40 and R&B artists. In the case of Atlantic Records’ “Wild Ones,” featuring Flo Rida & Sia, alongside a second collaboration with Alex Guesta & David Guetta, the remix package reached the top 10 in two dozen countries, and No. 1 in six nations, including the U.K.

In 2013, Guesta’s acclaim was further amped with the success of his hardcore underground multi-track release on Reshape “Paid N’ Laid”—also the moniker of his collaborations with DJ, producer and songwriter Yan Kings. Single “Nitro” was selected by Cat Clothes to anchor its TV commercial campaign. Meanwhile, Guesta now hosts his own radio show, available weekly as a downloadable podcast.

Among his late 2013 and upcoming releases: “Never Fade” (featuring Rykka) on Armada, “Quake” on Revealed by Hardwell, “Bring That Noize” on MixMash by Laidback Luke, “The Scream” on Ultra Records, “Can’t Fight the Feeling” on Stealth by Roger Sanchez, “Drumz” on Juicy by Robbie Rivera, and “Take Me Home” (Remix) by Cash Cash on Big Beat.

As DJ Alex Guesta’s dance card remains blissfully full, he is happy to report that he loves his job: “Every day, I may spend 20 hours in the studio, remixing, producing and playing. And then I get to see the results of my work in front of people. There’s no greater feeling than seeing a crowd moving in unison. Together, we are creating the night. I’m living a great life. Every moment is filled with passion. Who could ask for more?”
